Promising Nigerian forward Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei has completed a move to Portuguese women’s football champions Benfica, signing a contract until 2028 with an option to extend for two additional years.
The 18-year-old striker joins Benfica for the 2026/27 season after emerging as one of Nigeria’s brightest young football talents.
A product of Hallelujah FC Ladies Academy in Ikeja, Lagos, Seimeyeha represented Nigeria at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia and made her senior Super Falcons debut later that year in an international friendly against Algeria.
She rose to prominence during the 2024/25 Nigeria Women’s Football League season with Nasarawa Amazons, where she scored 13 goals in 19 matches to finish among the league’s top scorers and win the NWFL Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. She later joined Bayelsa Queens, where she continued her impressive development.
Speaking after completing the transfer, Seimeyeha expressed her excitement about joining Benfica.
“I’m happy! Benfica is a great club. It’s a privilege to be here and help the team win trophies and achieve great things,” she said.
The teenager also credited Nigerian international Christy Ucheibe for inspiring her move, revealing that the former Benfica player encouraged her to remain humble and work hard.
She concluded with a message to Benfica supporters: “Dear fans, I’m here. Go Benfica!”
Seimeyeha’s move marks another success story for Hallelujah FC Ladies Academy and further highlights Nigeria’s growing reputation for producing world-class women’s football talent.
