The sports journalism community in Lagos has been thrown into mourning following the death of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Lagos State Chapter member, Sodiq Martins, who passed away in the early hours of Friday after a brief illness.

The announcement of his death has sparked an outpouring of grief from colleagues and members of the association, who described him as a dedicated journalist whose professionalism and commitment to the profession earned him the admiration of many.

In a statement signed by the Secretary of Lagos SWAN, Omotunde Bello, the association expressed profound sadness over the loss, describing Martins’ passing as a painful blow to the sports journalism family in Lagos.

According to the statement, the late journalist distinguished himself through his dedication to duty, positive disposition, and active participation in the affairs of the association.

“We remember him for his dedication, professionalism, and the positive impact he made within the association. His contributions and warm personality will be greatly missed,” the statement read.

The association noted that Martins’ passing leaves a significant void within the sports media community, where he was respected by colleagues for his work ethic and passion for sports journalism.

Lagos SWAN extended its heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s immediate family, friends, professional colleagues, and all those affected by the loss, praying for divine comfort and strength during this difficult period.

The association also prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul.

“We pray that Almighty God grants his family, friends, and colleagues the strength and fortitude to bear this painful and irreparable loss, while granting our departed colleague eternal rest.

“May Almighty God continue to comfort and guide the family and loved ones of Sodiq Martins during this difficult time,” the statement added.

The death of Martins marks another moment of reflection for the media community, underscoring the invaluable contributions journalists make to sports development and the lasting impact they leave through their dedication to the profession.
