Lagos State University has continued its impressive run of student innovation and excellence, recording yet another ₦50 million Student Venture Capital Grant win, just weeks after a similar national recognition by a student of the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM).

The Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi OLATUNJI-BELLO, mni, NPOM, on Thursday, 30th April 2026, received Mr Taiwo Goodness UKWEDJE, a 300-level student of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, alongside a delegation from the Epe Campus, at the Conference Room, 6th Floor, Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building, Main Campus, Ojo.

Mr UKWEDJE’s achievement comes on the heels of an earlier milestone recorded by a final-year LASUCOM student, who also secured the same ₦50 million grant after emerging successful from over 30,000 applicants nationwide. The back-to-back successes highlight LASU’s growing reputation as a breeding ground for innovation, enterprise, and real-world problem solving.

Introducing the student, the Head of Campus, Epe, Professor Elkanah OYETUNJI, described the accomplishment as a testament to resilience, creativity, and the strong academic culture of the campus. He noted that the recognition brings significant visibility to the University.

Also speaking, the Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Professor K.F.K. OYEDEKO, emphasised the competitive nature of the grant, noting that Mr UKWEDJE distinguished himself among tens of thousands of applicants nationwide. He described the ₦50 million award as a “rare and outstanding distinction,” reflecting both the student’s ingenuity and the quality of training within the Faculty.

In his remarks, Mr UKWEDJE expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor and introduced his award-winning innovation, ‘D-Rentals’ – a verified housing platform designed to eliminate accommodation fraud targeting students. He explained that the solution aims to provide a secure and transparent system connecting users directly with verified housing options and is scheduled for launch in the next academic session. He thereafter presented the award certificate to the Vice-Chancellor.

In her response, the Vice-Chancellor congratulated Mr UKWEDJE, describing the achievement as a “landmark accomplishment” and a demonstration of world-class potential. She noted that the successive ₦50 million grant wins by LASU students reaffirm the University’s commitment to fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and excellence.

“This is a strong testament to the quality of education and mentorship we provide at Lagos State University,” she stated, encouraging the student to deploy the grant strategically while assuring him of the University’s continued support.

Other members of the delegation included Professor Gabriel O. SHONAIKE, Professor A.I. YUSSUFF, Professor O.P. AKINYEMI, Professor Nurudeen A. RAJI, Dr L. SALAMI, and Mr S.T. WHESU.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr Samuel OTESANYA, Senior Deputy Registrar, representing the University Registrar.
